It was the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights which reported this figure in its latest report, made public this Thursday, March 28, 2024.
In detail, 686 people were killed, 371 injured and 379 kidnapped during attacks perpetrated by gangs. It was not just innocent civilians who were victims. Members of these criminal groups, 696 in total, were killed or injured in the space of two months (January/February 2024).
Thus, the total number of people affected by armed violence, including both innocent civilians and gang members, stands at 2,131.
This upsurge in violence represents an increase of more than 40% compared to the previous two months, thus accentuating the growing insecurity plaguing the country. Still according to the OHCHR.
