“Loin turns” are very common. They can follow a false movement, carrying a heavy load, a sudden movement, etc. Pain is the main symptom. We will explain everything to you.

Low back pain: pain as the most common symptom

The lumbago, also called low back pain, affects the region between the lower edge of the ribs and the buttocks. It causes intense pain in the lower back.

There are two types of low back pain: acute or chronic.

The first is characterized by sharp pain in the lumbar region, associated with an inability to make usual movements. The second is characterized by repeated pain located in the lumbar region. The patient suffers for several months.

Pain is therefore the main symptom of lumbago.

“Low back pain can be acute (lasting less than 6 weeks), subacute (lasting 6 to 12 weeks) or chronic (lasting more than 12 weeks)” says the World Health Organization.

There are some symptoms related to back pain that should worry you. It could be :

  • From Fever;
  • Deterioration of general condition;
  • Unexplained weight loss;
  • Chest pain;
  • Significant deformation of the spine;
  • A progressive worsening during the night or rest periods;
  • From significant trauma.

These symptoms should lead you to consult a doctor quickly. He will be able to direct you towards appropriate treatment.

Applying heat to the painful area is recommended: this helps release muscle contractures linked to the accident.

Then, it is advisable to:

  • See a doctor : the treatment will depend on the patient’s pain, but also on their experience. Rehabilitation can be considered by a physiotherapist or occupational therapist.
  • Certain physical treatments can also be considered: orthosis, physiotherapy, painkillers, etc.
  • Play sports : physical activity often takes over from rehabilitation in the management of lumbago;
  • Treatment is generally symptomatic.

In the event of chronic low back pain, the doctor may decide to do a medical imaging test (MRI or CT scan).

The care is then multidisciplinary and may involve a physiotherapist, a rheumatologist, an occupational physician, a physical medicine specialist, etc.
